Halifax County Public School Information
There are fifteen elementary schools, one middle school, and one
high school. They place a strong emphasis on K-12 planning and
offers a curriculum that provides for continual development of
academic skills. Elementary schools include kindergarten through
six. Middle School serves the county’s seventh and eighth
grade students. In addition to required academic classes, a wide
range of exploratory courses allows students to begin to develop
their own interests. Offerings include Spanish, French, Latin,
public speaking, vocational offerings, music, art, broadcast
journalism, and others. High School is a four-year,
comprehensive high school with an enrollment of approximately
1,900. The curriculum is divided into four areas. College Prep
This is for students interested in entering college upon
completion of high school.
Occu Prep This is for students interested in immediate
employment upon completion of high school. A newly developed
Career Center will open in the Fall of 2000. Tech Prep This is
for students planning to continue their education in a technical
field at a community college or four-year college upon
completion of high school. Individualized Education Program This
is for students who have been identified as needing special
instruction due to some exceptionality. A four-by-four block
scheduling format is used. This will allow the opportunity of
students to complete as many as 32 units of credit in grades
nine through twelve. Graduation requirements for Standard
Diploma is 21 units, for an Advanced Studies Diploma is 23
units.
